Swim Safety Tips
When the sun is out and the weather is hot, most of us head to the water, be it lake, river, or a backyard pool. But, wherever there’s water, there’s also danger. Consider these quick tips for swim safety.
Follow Directions
At public pools or water parks, follow any posted instructions, and swim in designated areas with a lifeguard present. Don’t rely on the lifeguard alone, though. Never leave young children, or inexperienced swimmers unattended.
Teach and Learn
Teach children to ask permission before going near the water. If a child is missing, always check the water first. Even with proper floatation devices, you should maintain constant supervision. It’s always a good idea for parents and caretakers to learn CPR and other life-saving measures.
Use Caution on Open Water
Don’t dive into unfamiliar water. You never know what might be below the surface. In open bodies of water, watch for dangers that aren’t present in pools, like plants, animals, currents, and waves. Summer is often synonymous with swimming. Just keep in mind that some people need more supervision than others, and everyone needs to keep safety in mind at all times.
